There is a growing shortage of landfill space in this country.  Plastics that are not recycled clog our landfills, reaching their capacities; and most plastics that do end up in the landfill are NOT bio-degradable, meaning they will never just "go away".  But what can be done with the millions of plastic containers we discard every year?
